“Make up a list of required viewing. I bet I hav not seen half. I’m also not much of a movie/ TV person...An official Oppo required viewing thread.” — XJDano

So, my friends, let’s help out our comrade. What is on the list of classic “must see” cinema?

Obviously The Blues Brothers and Young Frankenstein start it off. And, of course Star Wars . I’m also going to throw in Back to the Future. Discuss...

I personally would recommend Gattaca, Memento, Europa report, The Iron Giant, 2001 a Space odyssey, Jurassic park, Terminator, Jaws... That’s all the really good (at least in my opinion) films I can think of right now.

Can’t edit because Kinja but here’s some more

Primer, District 9, Apollo 18, Guardians of the Galaxy, Arrival, Contact, Alien, Avatar, ET, Wall-E, Signs, Coraline, The Lion King, Cabin in the Woods.

I personally (clearly) am a fan of the How to train your dragon movies but I probably wouldn’t recommend them for him to watch.

There’s many, many more.

It’s a great film. I really don’t like found footage all that much but i’ll give this and Cloverfield (also should go on the list) a pass because I think they were really well done. It takes a lot to get me scared and this did it.

Also more for the list.

Cloverfield, A.I., Super 8. Ok I think that’s all the movies that I can re-watch without getting tired of them.

I was waiting for someone to say Highlander. Also, Repo Man defines cult classic. So does The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Also Animal House

And don’t forget The Breakfast Club, Top Gun, True Lies, Army of Darkness.

No one mentioned the Godfather, the usual suspects, and Goodfellas?
Shame on you!
Less obvious choices: Slevin, Donnie Darko (weird, but I love it), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Shoot em up, Book of Eli, Children of men, 28 days later

You did! Mission accomplished.

And while you’re going there, I’m gonna mention Patton . And The Sound of Music.

In addition to the many excellent ones already listed on this page, I’ll add (apologize for any redundancies):

Apollo 13

Grave of the Fireflies followed immediately by My Neighbor Totoro.

Serenity

V for Vendetta

Pirates of Silicon Valley

Gone in 60 Seconds

RED, followed immediately by RED 2

Supertroopers

Mean Girls

Others to come. Lunch time.

No apologies necessary.

Forgot about RED, which reminds me of the greatest Christmas film of all time, Die Hard .
